What to Know

Critics Consensus

A shallow excavation of ancient lore from Andrzej Sapkowski's fantasy series, Blood Origin shares ancestral DNA with The Witcher but little of what makes the mothership series memorable.

Worse, though, is its consuming, crushing lack of imagination, its action indulging in fantasy clichés with almost belligerent zeal. Only completists need tune in. Go to Full Review

Creakily-assembled and fuelled largely by silliness, Blood Origin is for devoted Witcher watchers alone. Go to Full Review

A modestly enjoyable grab-bag of fluid action sequences, Middle Earth memories, and goofy gambits. Yeoh leads the way with a welcome gravitas, and six episodes of this origin tale is a thankfully succinct length. Go to Full Review

The whole thing subtracts rather than adds to the world of The Witcher. It's pretty much everything that can go wrong with a prequel in one four-hour-long package. Go to Full Review

Ben N @Bneffer May 3 More of the world of The Witcher is not a bad thing. I think more locations and less focus on just Xin'trea could have been a good thing, and the overall plot is fairly simple and develops a little too quickly. I found it difficult to connect to Merwyn or Balor unfortunately. Some fights were splashy without substance. A two season build up with more plot to help explain the rational behind some decisions and establish stronger characters would have helped. Regardless, I enjoyed my watch, but it's just ok in the end. It got an extra star for the songs. I love bards and the songs were pretty good. See more HypeShare O @HasuVolente Apr 29 The Witcher - was great with Henry Cavill, fell off when he left, shifted focus to the female characters, became garbage. Blood Origin - female focused, plot and execution, garbage. Rats - super female self centered focus, terrible plot and execution, garbage. Should have kept Cavill in the mix, shouldn’t have let only women call all the shots, shouldn’t have been so desperate to turn such a beloved brand into a selfish endeavour assert feminity all over the place. Thanks Haily Hall, Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, Tasha Huo, and Aaron Stewart-Ahn for caring more about asserting feminity all over the place instead of sticking to what The Witcher material is actually about. I hope this and all the failed Hollywood projects that are managed by girl bosses who focus on feminine personal political and idealogical agendas continue fail. Women are amazing, we need them, their contributions to the world are unmatched, don’t mean you need yo make everything about them forcefully. See more J K. @CastleJSkull Apr 7 Are you kidding me with these bad ratings? This is the strongest offering The Witcher franchise has ever produced. It avoids the tired trope of Yennefer and Geralt's terrible love story and brings actual compelling stakes. This is a fantastic and fun fantasy adventure that stands alone and maybe that's the point? If you are not familiar with the game or original show, you're probably going to like this a lot! I suspect a lot of these bad ratings are from the fan base because this apparently departs from source material. This is actually an entire party of cool characters that I would love to see a heck of a lot more from. It's like if critical role was live action and took itself a bit more seriously. See more Torben E @Torben Mar 31 Uninspired lackluster cash grabs like this are the downfall of film-making. I wanted to like it because I'm a huge fan of the "Witcher" books and video games. I also liked the first three seasons of the Netflix series. But this one...a total waste of time. Bad acting, bad dialogues, bad action scenes and an even worse script. The decision-makers behind this atrocity should feel ashamed because this limited series destroyed the fascination of the Witcher universe almost single-handedly. Skip it. Don't watch it. It's really a waste of your time. See more Michael C @RT65973121 Jan 28 Given that all of The Witcher stories are a thin rip off of Michael Moorcock's far more imaginative and more cerebral tales, 'Blood Origin' is perhaps the nest of their offerings. A shame Netflix hasn't yet picked up on Moorcock's outstanding stories from the 1960's and 1970's - they will, one day! See more faraz n @Faraznsh Dec 27 I am a multi-lingual 29 y.o persian (iranian) boy. This series was a masterpiece. I watched it 3 times by now. It is overwhelmingly positive and entertaining. It is very healthy and aesthetically rich. The story line goes very fluent and i really could understand the characters. I absolutely disagree with a rating below 6 for this series. It was very shocking to find how the other watchers find this series. The director and the actors have my gratitude for their fascinating job. I am sure i am going to watch it every 2 years (just to make sure i forget it and it is fresh to me again…🌹 See more Read all reviews
